The sound of the water is relaxing

Let's embark on an authentic adventure as we explore the heart of Istanbul with a must-try Turkish bath experience! Istanbul boasts a variety of options for every budget, but for a truly enriching escape, choose a historical hamam over a hotel spa to immerse yourself in the city’s cultural tapestry.

One standout gem on our list is Kilic Ali Paşa (Pacha) Hamamı a time-traveling haven dating back to 1580. Located in close proximity to Karaköy and Taksim, this hamam offers services such as traditional Turkish bath treatments, and its reasonable prices make it a popular choice.

To ensure a seamless experience, make sure to secure your reservation in advance due to this hamam’s popularity. As you step into this historical retreat, be prepared for a warm welcome and a sip of refreshing seasonal fruit sherbet. The soothing acoustic ambiance instantly transports you to a bygone era, setting the stage for an immersive journey.

At most hamams and in this one as well, there is a dedicated staff member (called "tellak" in Turkish) who takes care of each individual. The hamam bath begins with lying on a hot stone, followed by exfoliation and a foam bath. Keep in mind that you will be partially naked, just like when you are getting a massage. After the bath, you can move to the main lounge area to have a tea and relax.

Here are a few details to make your experience truly exceptional:

WHEN CAN YOU USE THE HAMAM?

Open every day but women can use the bath until 4:00 PM, and men can use it after 4:00 PM.

HOW TO GET THERE?

The Hamam is quite centrally located with Tophane Tram Station at 3 minutes walking distance, Karaköy Ferry Station at a 10 minute walk.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BRING?

You don’t need to bring anything extra for the hamam bath. They provide everything you need, including a disposable briefs, slippers, loincloth to cover yourselves and hair dryer for after. But if you feel more comfortable with your swimsuit, or underwear you can use them too. And also if you prefer using your own shampoo, it is welcomed.

WHERE CAN YOU LEAVE YOUR BAGS ETC.?

There is a safe for your valuable belongings, and locker rooms are also available.

PLACES TO EAT NEARBY

There are quite a bit of alternatives nearby. If you want to taste something sweet try Turkish Baklava at Karaköy Güllüoğlu, one of the best baklava shops in town.

HOW MUCH IS IT?

The price as December, 2023 was 1950 TRY. Please remember that the prices may be different in future.

ARE THERE OTHER HAMAM ALTERNATIVES?

Absolutely! Çemberlitaş Hamamı, which is located near the Grand Bazaar and Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hamam, located between the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque, a luxurious hamam offering a variety of pampering options, including body scrubs, bubble washing rituals, and aromatherapy massages in a historic setting.
