Istanbul's Culinary Marvel: Why Kebabs Are a Must-Try?

Visitors to Istanbul often dream of indulging in Döner Kebab, a celebrated Turkish specialty crafted from beef or chicken for a good reason. Döner Kebab or Döner in short is a delicacy for meat lovers. However, Döner is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the universe of kebabs in Istanbul. The city boasts a vast array of kebab varieties, with hundreds of unique flavors waiting in thousands of shops throughout. For those eager to dive deep into a world of grilled meats and vibrant spices, Istanbul’s kebab shops present a culinary journey not to be missed. Wondering where to start?

This post highlights some of our top kebab destinations, all situated on the European side of Istanbul, each offering its own taste of local tradition and innovation. Please note that we pinned all of the kebabs shops on a map at the end of the page, feel free to use it to get to them.

Antiochia: Kebab and tapas from Southern Turkey

Mixed Lamb Kebab

One of our local favorites, Antiochia is located in Pera. The restaurant specializes in lamb based kebabs and vegan tapas (meze in Turkish).  The Simit and zahter made for excellent starters. You can also try the 6-piece meze plate for sharing, where the hummus and babaganoush stood out for their flavors. Mixed kebabs and Hatay-style wrap is a highlight here, highly recommended for the whole table to try. For those with a sweet tooth, ending the meal with Künefe, a cheese-based dessert, or Kireçte Balkabağı, a lime-marinated pumpkin dessert, is a must. (#1 on the map)

Asker Usta: Local kebab spot near Istinye Park shopping mall

Muhteşem Üçlü with sides

Craving meat after a long day? This little kebab shop could be the cure for you. Try "Muhteşem Üçlü' aka the superb trio: Yağlı Kara, Çöp Şiş, and Adana. For a unique taste, consider Uykuluk and Ciğer (Liver). Expect crowds during lunch. For a quieter experience, late afternoon is ideal. If you are driving, you can skip the traffic by parking at the 42 Maslak shopping mall; Asker Usta is just a 5-6 minute walk away. Enjoy your meal in advance! 🤤 (#2 on the map)

Dürüm, Hummus and Homemade pickles

Papatya Dürüm: Retro Kebab Shop

Enjoy kebabs, wraps, and mezes at this small retro style shop located in Istanbul's Arnavutköy district. For the best pairing, combine your kebab with Şalgam Suyu (a red carrot-based fermented juice) or Ayran. If spicy grilled chicken appeals to you, the Harbiye Usulü Tavuk is a great choice. After your meal, take a stroll around Arnavutköy for coffee, tea, or desserts.(#3 on the map)

Dönerci Celal Usta: Solid old fashioned Döner

Iskender Kebab

This restaurant is a frequent stop for us in Istanbul, offering a no-frills but solid experience. It features variety of Döner Kebabs, including Iskender Kebab (Döner served over pita bread with tomato sauce and yogurt), Lavaş Üstü (Döner with thin pita), and Pilav Üstü (Döner with rice). We recommend pairing Döner with homemade Ayran, a Turkish salty yogurt-based drink. Conclude your meal with a cup of Turkish tea or dessert. Despite often being busy, the service here is notably quick. (#4 on the map)

Nişantaşı Başköşe

Located in Nişantaşı shopping area, this resturant is a place we are frequenting for 10+ years. Full variety of kebabs (Döner, Adana, Fıstıklı to name a few) and mezes (tapas). You will bump into quite a bit of expats and tourists here too.(#5 on the map)

Zübeyir Ocakbaşı

Located near the Taksim square, this kebab restaurant has a wide selection of kebabs and tapas (mezes).  Pretty much everything is tasty. We usually order Rakı (the aniseed based alcoholic Turkish drink) and Şalgam suyu as the company to the food here. (#6 on the map)

Asmalımescit Dürümcüsü

Discover this cosy kebab shop in the Asmalımescit area of Taksim, serving authentic Hatay-style kebab wraps 🌯. Pair your meal with local Şalgam Suyu (a unique salty red carrot juice) or refreshing ayran for the perfect flavor complement. Don't miss the exceptionally tasty hummus from the appetizers menu. End your meal on a high note with half portions of katmer and pumpkin dessert in lime - a delightful conclusion. 👍 (#7 on the map)
