If you've decided to visit Istanbul during the summer months and if you're an adventurous person who gets tired of hot weather, this one-day itinerary is perfect for you.
Transportation: You can reach Heybeliada by ferry* from both the Anatolian and European sides. The most preferred departure points on the Anatolian side are Bostancı, Kadıköy, and Kartal, while on the European side, there are Beşiktaş and Kabataş. Let's also mention that ferry trips from the Anatolian side to Heybeliada are considerably shorter.
You can check the ferry schedules and operating companies (both public and private) through the links provided below*:
As we wanted to enjoy a bit of nature and have an adventure away from the crowds, we decided to join canoo tour organized by our friends,"Patikatur". We met our group at Asaf Bey Beach where you need to pay an entrance fee of around 150 TL on weekdays and 200 TL on weekends. Despite having a large area as a facility, it gets quite crowded on weekends, and loud music is played. Therefore, it's not very suitable for those seeking a peaceful environment.
After departing from Asaf Bey Beach with our canoes, we headed towards Alman Beach and beyond. In these areas, there are many boats, and there might be currents or waves, so we recommend doing this tour with a knowledgeable guide who is familiar with the surroundings. Right in the middle of the route, around Alman Beach, we took a break on a beautiful beach.
In the middle of the route, near Alman Beach, you can take a break and enjoy some snacks on a beautiful beach.
You might also see the remains believed to be associated with the "Terki Dunya Monastery "and later revealed to be from the Sapele monastery on the island. Unfortunately, the Sapele monastery has been destroyed, so it's worth noting that you can't see much other than a few stone fragments.
After the break, we paddled our canoes
again until we reached Ada Beach. There, we refueled our energy with some toasts and patato chips then moved to the forest hiking part of the tour with our guide. Please be aware that the forest area is not open to the public, and unauthorized hiking is not possible.
Walking through historical mansions, we ended the route at "Munis Sokak Lezzetleri", a renowned restaurant on the island known for its homemade hamburger. If you visit there, you should try their homemade lemonade and hamburger. However, since the islands are generally known for rakı (a traditional Turkish alcoholic beverage) and fish, you can also choose to end the day with rakı and fish in the tavernas along the sea.
Restaurant Suggestions:
Munis Sokak Lezzetleri for homemade burger and street food)
Restaurants near the pier on the shore for fish & rakı* (we have tried Barbayani Restaurant)
The Corner (Street Food)
LOCALIST TIPS*
* You can use your "Istanbul Card", "Akbil" or "Istanbul Card Mobile App" for the tickets.
* Try to visit Prince Islands during the weekdays because it is very crowded during the weekends.
* Remember to bring a swimsuit, a waterproof case for your mobile, extra dry clothes and a waterproof backpack if you have one.
* While the atmosphere is perfect for Rakı & Fish, we must admit that Burgazada and Büyükada offer much more delicious options.
